The tradition of Portuguese charcoal grilling dates back hundreds of years. Our ancestors began using wood from old cork trees to create the fragant charcoal that contributes to our unique flavor. Our real wood charcoal fire pit continues that tradition. During the 15th century, Portuguese explorers discovered the African Bird’s Eye chili and quickly developed an appreciation for its flavor. Since then, Piri Piri has been widely used in Portuguese cuisine and our grilling is no exception. We import our own chilis from Mozambique. Our meats are hand-brushed with our house-made Piri Piri sauce in the fire pit.

As Hoboken's first and only Portuguese restaurant, we are committed to ensuring our patrons enjoy the best possible gastronomic experience. Piri Piri is family owned and operated. We use only the freshest ingredients and refuse to use large corporate meat and poultry suppliers. Instead, we partner only with smaller family-operated farms. All our barbecue is finished with our subtle, yet flavorful Piri Piri sauce. We import whole Piri Piri peppers from Africa to create the base of our barbecue preparation,  such as our ancestors began doing in the 15th century.
